Stanford Le Hope Match Reports – 3rd / 4th June 2006

Shepherd Neame League

Epping 135ao  (44.1 overs)                            Stanford  139 – 1 (20.4 overs)

M. Webb 47, Ross Poulton 4-49                 Robert Page 79no, Bill Poskitt Jnr 44no

Bill Poskitt Jnr 4-21

Stanford retained their grip on top spot in Division 3 with another crushing win. Epping chose to bat in the glorious sunshine at Stanford and made slow, but steady progress against the frugal seam attack provided by Dion Bryant and Gary Sanderson. Webb (47) and Twitchett (22) added 43 for the first wicket, until the latter became Bryant’s only victim. Maynard (25) joined Webb and the two continued to make progress, so that the visitors stood at a comfortable 88-1 at the end of the 29th over. At this point, Bill Poskitt Jnr (4-21) was introduced into the attack. He bowled the stubborn Webb, and in conjunction with spin partner Ross Poullton (4-47), proceeded to dismantle the rest of the Epping line-up, with only one other player managing double figures.

!35 was never likely to be a challenging total to the in-form Stanford batsmen. Apart from the early loss of Peter Gray, it was an untroubled run chase. Fellow opener, Essex U16, Robert Page (79no) unfurled his full range of shots as he found the boundary 15 times in his knock. Poskitt Jnr (44no) joined him in a partnership of 133 for the 2nd wicket to seal a personally satisfying afternoon and a comfortable victory.

Stanford won by 9 wickets. Stanford 18 points    Epping 4 points

Stanford II  154ao                                      Epping II  68ao

Sean Barker 40, Clive Ballard 32                    Kevin Smith 4-20

Shahid Majeed 6-36

Stanford’s 2nd string also kept top spot, with a 100% record from games played so far. They have put together excellent team performances, with a number of players standing up to be counted when things have gone wrong.  On this occasion, youngster Sean Barker (40), dug in to resist a fine spell from Epping skipper Shahid Majeed (6-36), who had the visitors struggling  at 24-3, when Barker entered the fray. Bronzed Adonis Clive Ballard (32) played a typically aggressive innings and a brief flurry at the end from Greg Barr (18no) allowed Stanford to edge over the 150 mark.

Normally a score of 150 would be considered very ‘gettable’, but the new Stanford 2nds attack has a real cutting edge and is backed up by excellent fielding.  The tone was set, when Greg Barr ran out Epping’s experienced opener, Tony Sanderson. From that point on, Epping never looked like threatening the total. John Hicks (2-13) picked up early wickets, but it was Kevin Smith (4-20) who destroyed Epping’s hopes by ripping out the middle order. Barr (2-10) returned to the attack to clinch a resounding win. Stanford won by 86 runs. Stanford 20 points   Epping 4 points

Benfleet III  176ao                                      Stanford III 112ao

M. Jackson 52, Daryl Woodford 3-21        Stuart McInnes 43, P. Frencham 7-8

Stanford 3rds were devastated by a 6 over spell by youngster Paul Frencham. He toppled 7 Stanford batsmen for only 8 runs, to destroy any hope of the visitors threatening the home total of 176. Only Stuart McInnes (43) of the Stanford batsmen offered much resistance. He shared a last wicket stand of 48 with Ian Sanderson, to give the total a veneer of respectability.

Stanford’s performance in the field earlier, had also left much to be desired. Whilst Jackson (52) had batted well, the bowlers conceded a total of 49 extras, which flattered the Benfleet score enormously. Ian Sanderson and McInnes had picked up a couple of early wickets each, but the pick of the bowlers was Daryl Woodford who returned 3-21. Stanford lost by 64 runs. Stanford 4 points  Benfleet 20 points

Stanford IV  63ao                                        Billericay IV  65-4

K. Paternoster 3-4, E. Stonell 3-6                   M.Simnet 40, Peter ward 3-20

Stanford 4ths inability to post a decent total cost them once again at the Billet. Having won the toss and elected to bat, not a single player made it into double figures. Extras with 20, provided the bulk of the total. The early damage was done by Garrad (2-12) but the innings was finished off by Paternoster (£-3) and Stonell (3-6).

Stanford put up a much better show in the field, with Peter Ward (3-20), pinning the visiting batsmen down. Opener Simnet (40) rode his luck to virtually clinch the match single-handed. Stanford lost by 6 wickets. Stanford 1 point   Billericay 18 points

Sunday Friendly – The Richard Pusey Acetabular Cup

Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals 190ao          Stanford 155ao

Haidie 93, Gutoor 32, Paul Cross 3-25                            Lee Knight 88no, Asim 4-32

This annual match for the Acetabular Cup, was attended by former Orthopaedic Consultant Richard Pusey, who donated the trophy on his retirement 4 years ago. He saw the hospital team post a useful total of 190, thanks to a splendid knock from opener Haidie (93) who received good support from Gutoor (32). Paul Cross (3-25) was Stanford’s most successful bowler.

Stanford’s reply almost never got off the ground as Asim (4-32) and Guttoor (2-34), had the home team reeling at 19-5. However, skipper Lee Knight (88no) led from the front. He was joined by Daryl Woodford (19) in a  6th wicket partnership of 48. Another flurry of wickets saw him left with just last man, John Harris (10) for company. This unlikely pair added 67 for the final wicket, fostering hopes of an impossible win, before Asim returned to bowl Harris and grab the cup back for the hospital.  B & T U H won by 35 runs.
