Old Brentwoods 100ao (41.4
overs)
Stanford 103-6 (22.1 overs) Ross Poulton 4-27, Greg Barr
3-17
Bill Poskitt Jnr 37, P.Gray24 With threatening weather conditions, Stanford were in a hurry to get this game in and maintain their lead at the top of the table. Michael Gray took the risky decision of inserting the Old Boys, knowing they needed to bowl them out cheaply and chase down the total swiftly. They got the perfect start as Greg Barr (3-17), whipped out 3 of the top 4 in quick order. Dion Bryant bowled 19 excellent overs to pick up 2-51, but the bowling star was Ross Poulton, who used the gale blowing in his face to good advantage to collect 4-27 as the Old Brentwood innings imploded. Faced with only 100 to chase, Stanford began well, as Bill Poskitt Jnr (39) and Peter Gray (24) added 52 for the 1st wicket and it appeared that the win was a formality. However, a string of rash shots and an unfortunate run out, suddenly had the Stanford men under pressure, as Selby (3-52) and Hussein (2-5) stuck to their task. Fortunately, Stanford were able to rely on the cooler, experienced heads of Michael Gray (17no) and Duncan Page (8no) to see them home by 4 wickets. Stanford 18 points
Old Brentwoods 2 points
The League position still leaves Stanford at the top, with Harold Wood and Southend close behind. Old Southendians still have a remote chance of promotion, but only if they thrash Stanford next week and other results go their way. Stanford need a win to guarantee promotion, Stanford II 158ao (50.4
overs)
Old Brentwoods II 159-7 (36.3 overs) Mark Nuttall 58, Chris Lee 7-50 Lee Merryweather 60,
Jacob Tarlinto 4-68, Kevin Smith 3-61 Stanford’s second string stumbled at the penultimate hurdle, when a win would have virtually guaranteed them promotion. Having been inserted by Old Brentwoods, they needed a solid start, but they lost star batsman Jacob Tarlinton with only 4 on the board. Mark Nuttall who dropped anchor for 58 and Mark Knight (20) repaired the early damage with a stand of 59, but Stanford lost wickets steadily as Chris Lee (7-50), bowled a superb spell. Only Wayne Simmons (210 and James drain (18), made it into double figures as the Stanford innings subsided to a paltry-looking 158 all out Old Brentwood’s openers,
Hollington (27) and Lee (15) got them off to a solid start in reply, but it was
Lee Merryweather (60) who really sank Stanford. He stuck to his task, to bring
the Old Boys within range. Tarlinton (4-62) and Kevin Smith (3-61) both bowled
long spells and at times, Stanford looked as though they might have a chance,
but the Old Boys eased home to a 3 wicket win to leave Stanford
very disappointed with themselves. Stanford 7 points
Old Brentwoods 18 points Basildon & Pitsea have won the division, and Stanford II must beat Old Southendians to clinch the other promotion spot. Any other result leaves the way clear for Hadleigh & Thundersley to pip them at the post. |
