Stanford le Hope CC – Match Reports 26th August 2006

Shepherd Neame League

Benfleet  202-6 (52 overs)                            Stanford 203-5 (44 overs)

Andy Scott 53, Ross Poulton 4-46                 Peter Gray 65, Ross Poulton 63no

The weather affected this match, as play was delayed for 45 minutes before play could commence. It also created a sticky pitch on which to bat and Stanford skipper Michael Gray, was happy to win the toss and insert Benfleet. They made steady progress against the seam attack, although both opening batsmen, Andy Scott (53) and Paul Tremain (37) benefited from dropped catches. In fact, Stanford’s catching was unusually sloppy, with five fairly comfortable chances going down altogether. Scott and Tremain added 79 for the first wicket before Lee Knight broke the partnership. At this point, Gray introduced his two left-arm spinners and batting became much more difficult. Ross Poulton was particularly miserly, bowling 17 overs and picking up 4-46. He received good support from Bill Poskitt Jnr and the two of them restricted the visitors to 202 from their 52 overs. Stanford bowled their overs in less than two and a half hours, which made up a great deal of the lost time.

Conditions did improve after tea and Peter Gray (65) joined forces with Poskitt Jnr (30) to give Stanford a solid start as they posted 68 for the 1st wicket. They then went through a sticky patch, Gray watching 4 partners disappear in quick succession before he eventually succumbed himself, to Benfleet veteran Ron Steed (2-53). There were no more alarms for Stanford, as Ross Poulton (63no) took control. He enjoyed good support from Michael Gray (24no) as they shared an unbroken 6th wicket stand of 82 to clinch a five wicket win, which puts them back on top of Division 3 with just two games remaining. Old Parkonian II 167-7 (52 overs)           Stanford II 171-3 (41 overs)

V.Pandaya 39, W.Yusaf 30                            Jacob Tarlinton 104no, Mark Knight 28no

Jacob Tarlinton 3-55

Someone forgot to tell Jacob Tarlinton how tricky it was batting on a damp Old Parkonian wicket. Old Parks had struggled to 167-7 from their allocated 52 and Stanford stood at 43-3 from 24 sticky overs when the Aussie strode to the wicket. 16 overs later the match had ended, as Tarlinton smashed the ball to all parts of the ground. It was a brutal assault on what had been tidy home bowling as 7 sixes and 13 fours screamed from his bat. Stanford opener Mark Knight (28no), who had dropped anchor, watched with a mixture of bemusement and relief as Tarlinton launched himself at the bowling, contenting himself with pushing a single so that the carnage could continue. These two added 128 for the 4th wicket, of which Knight’s contribution was 16!

Earlier, the home team had struggled to make headway against the twin spin attack of Tarlinton (3-55 from 20) and Sam Spooner (2-13 from 11). Only Pandya (39) and Yusaf (30) made any sort of telling contribution as Stanford kept a tight grip on the game. At first 167 looked to be a challenging total as Old Parks opening bowlers Campbell (1-7 from 8) and Beaven (2-52 from 20) made life tough for the visiting batsmen, but the Aussie assault proved too much as Stanford ran out 7 wicket winners, to maintain their promotion challenge.

Stanford III  146ao (46.5 overs)              Old Parkonian III 147-7 (47.2 overs)

Jon Fuller 36, John Harris 28no                A. Bouquet 35no, A.Parkes 37,

I.Simpson 5-26                                                John Harris 4-50

On the adjoining pitch to the 2nds, batting was equally difficult, with no-one able to get on top of the bowling. Old Parks are top of their division, but were surprised by Stanford’s battling qualities. Having inserted the visitors, the Old Boys proceeded to steadily dismantle the batting. Stanford opener Jon Fuller (36) could only watch helplessly as his team mates came and went without a double figure score between them. When he eventually departed, Stanford stood at a woeful 102-9 and a home win seemed a formality. Enter an unlikely last wicket pairing of John Harris (28no) and youngster Adam Knight (19). Mixing stubborn defence with some outrageous slogs, they pushed the total up to 146, to at least give themselves something to bowl at.

Harris continued his heroics with the ball, bowling a marathon 21 overs unchanged to pick up 4-50. Bouquet (35no) proved a stubborn opponent to shift, as he settled in to anchor the innings. Parkes (37) also contributed well, but Stanford remained in the hunt as Luke Dennis picked up a couple of cheap wickets. However, Bouquet’s resolution was not to be sniffed at as he guided his team home by 3 wickets.

Wickford IV  150ao (38.2 overs)              Stanford IV  137ao (48.5 overs)

B.Carey 62no, Adrian Page 3-9                      Bill Poskitt Snr 37no, Neil Doherty 32

                                                                        Ian Masterton 3-30

Wickford elected to bat on a wet track and were soon in trouble as Stanford skipper Adrian Page (3-9) struck early blows for the home side. He then took himself off to give his back-up bowling a chance, which relieved the pressure on the visitors. The young visiting keeper Carey, dug himself in and eventually progressed to 62no to allow his side to set a gettable but challenging total. Laura Knight (2-23) and Wilf Gansbuhler (2-23) brought the innings to a close.

Stanford’s reply could not have begun much more ignominiously. Wickets tumbled with terrible frequency, whilst No4 Neil Doherty (32) could only look on aghast. At 61-8 the match appeared to be over, however, Bill Poskitt Snr (37no) offered Doherty some stout support as they added 38. Doherty’s vigil eventually ended, but Wickford suffered more alarms as Wilf Gansbuhler (18) offered more defiance. He and Poskitt Snr garnered a valuable batting point and pressed on to see if they could overhaul an increasingly jittery Wickford side. They failed heroically by just 13 runs.

Essex Sunday League

Orsett 173-8 (40 overs)                               Stanford 176-9 (39.4 overs)

Ryan Madder 51, Ross Poulton 4-19                Dion Bryant 63

Laura Knight turned match-winner with the bat on her 1st team debut, despatching the fourth ball of the final over to the boundary to clinch an unlikely win for Stanford. With both sides missing several players, the match turned into a fine and ultimately, nail-biting contest. Stanford stand-in skipper Mark Knight inserted the home team and although Douglas (29), Smith (20) and Khan (19) all looked threatening, they were unable to build on their starts. Ross Poulton (4-19) destroyed the middle-order and Laura Knight bowled her 4 overs for a miserly 3 runs. Ryan Madder (51) came to the rescue of the home side as he hit out lustily to ensure that Orsett posted a decent total.

Stanford looked comfortable in the run chase at 97-1 as Dion Bryant (63) dominated the bowling and Stanford were firm favourites at 146-4, needing fewer than 30 runs to win. However, a flurry of wickets caused panic in the Stanford ranks and they slumped to 163-9 as Laura Knight walked out to join her father Mark. Somehow, the father / daughter partnership repulsed everything that Orsett could throw at them and eked out the runs to clinch a super local derby. The points actually put Stanford in 3rd position and challenging for a late promotion push.
