le Hope CC – Match Reports 5th August 2006 Shepherd Neame League
Stanford 206-9 (52 overs)
Epping
210-6 (46 overs) Dion Bryant 60, Ross Poulton 44 Dan Twitchett 57, Ross Poulton 3-59 D Bickley 4-59 A lacklustre performance by Stanford, saw them slip up in their race to be 3rd Division champions. They will certainly need to improve next week when they take on second placed Harold Wood, who are putting together a threatening run. Having been inserted, Stanford made a steady start through Peter Gray (22) and Bill Poskitt Jnr (20), but then lost four wickets fairly cheaply as Bickley (4-59) and Masum (3-42), kept things tight. A good stand of 69 between Dion Bryant (60) and Ross Poulton (44), should have seen Stanford launch a final assault to boost their total well over the 200 mark, but Bickley and Masum both returned for 2nd spells that put paid to that hope, leaving Stanford with a 52 over total of 206. Stanford began with their left-arm spin pairing of Poulton and Poskitt Jnr and the latter had some early success, picking up the Epping opener with his 4th ball. However, Dan Twitchett (57) dropped anchor as Saifur (31), Everett (34) and Sibley (42) all played their part in overhauling the Stanford total, with an over of the last 20 to spare. Poulton returned 3-59 from his 18 over spell. Epping won by 4 wickets Stanford 10 points Epping 18 points Epping II

259-8 (42.1 overs) S. Majeed 116, Jacob Tarlinton 4-78 Chopper Truong 54no, Sam Spooner 40
Dean Hitchcock 49, Mahesh 4-45 Stanford 2nds completed a breathtaking run-chase, that Stanford statistician, John Hicks, thinks may be a 2nd team record. Having inserted Epping, Stanford had to endure the sight of visiting skipper Majeed (116), lashing the ball to all parts of the Rec. Next highest score was only 26, but Stanford only regained a small measure of control, when they turned to their spinners – Jacob Tarlinton (4-78) and Sam Spooner (2-61) who both bowled lengthy spells. 255 looked to be a bridge too
far for the home side, but a great team effort soon began to chip away the
deficit. All the top seven batsmen made a contribution, with skipper Dean
Hitchcock (49) leading by example. Spooner (40) and wicket keeper Chopper Truong
(54no), put together a key 6th wicket partnership of 72 to take
Stanford within striking distance. A flurry of wickets, caused by the return of
opener Mahesh (4-45) caused some panic in the home ranks, but Truong kept his
nerve to steer his team to a two wicket victory.

3-33
Adam Knight 30no Stanford 3rd string had their fingers burnt by a remarkable onslaught by Benfleet No7, Rob Burns (121). He peppered the boundaries with big shots and Stanford, who until his entrance had been picking up wickets regularly, suddenly found themselves chasing a huge target. So aggressive was his attack, Benfleet were able to declare after only 42 overs, leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb. As it happens, Stanford stumbled in the foothills, losing three wickets with only 17 on the board. Skipper Stuart McInnes (29), who had earlier returned the only respectable bowling figures as he picked up 3-33, did his best with the bat and together with Luke Dennis (29) pushed the Stanford total towards respectability. However, it was a sterling effort by youngster Adam Knight (30no) that enabled Stanford to secure a couple of batting points, despite succumbing to a 102 run defeat. Billericay IV 173-7 (29.5 overs) Adrian Page 64, Mark Mayhook 4-26 D. Bull 52, Mark Mayhook 45.
Adrian Page 4-63 It is a measure of the progress that Stanford’s 4ths have made this season, that they nearly toppled the 2nd placed team. They battled away resiliently with the bat, led by skipper Adrian Page’s patient 64, against some accurate and hostile bowling from Mark Mayhook, who bowled 20 overs and took 4-26! 170 may have seemed a small total to defend, especially as Mayhook (45), who opened as he had to leave early and Bull (52) carved the early bowling away as they added 74 for the 1st wicket in quick time. However, things changed when Page (4-63) brought himself on. He managed to get rid of both openers and the Billericay boat began to rock. Stanford stepped up a gear in the field as wickets began to tumble. In the end, Bills scraped home by three wickets. Stanford IV 7 points Billericay IV 18 points |
