Stanford le Hope CC – Match Reports 19th August 06

Shepherd Neame League

Stanford 172-7  (52 overs)                           Buckhurst Hill  173-5  (45.2 overs)

Ross Poulton 56no, Arshad Mughal 5-61            Joe Slisz 71

Once again Stanford slipped up against a lower placed team, to be eased out of top spot by Southend on Sea, who registered a 10 wicket win at Ongar. The fight for the top two places is constantly changing and Stanford reckon they will have to win their three remaining games to clinch promotion. Having been inserted by Buckhurst Hill, the visitors struggled for runs from the off. They had to compete with a damp surface that became easier as the match progressed, but that should detract nothing from Hill’s bowling performance. Arshad Murghal (5-61) led the way with 23 super-tight overs to keep Stanford in check. The visitors lost 7 wickets for a paltry 89 by the time the 36th over had finished. Ross Poulton (56no) led the recovery with a sensible innings. With support from Andrew Robinson (26no), Poulton added 83 in an unbroken 8th wicket stand, which just saw them fail to pick up an extra couple of batting points.

Batting after tea was an easier affair as Joe Slisz (71) and Patel (35) demonstrated with a stand of 62 for the 2nd wicket, and although Stanford picked up a few wickets, Hill were always in control of a steady and ultimately successful run chase. Buckhurst Hill won by 5 wickets.  Stanford 6 points   Buckhurst Hill  18 points

Stanford II 222ao (49.2 overs)            Hadleigh & Thundersley II 182-7 (50 overs)

Jacob Tarlinton 72,                             K.Brigg 48

Colin Yeomans 35, D.Toplis 4-45

The 2nd & 3rd placed teams in the in their league fought out a draw which Stanford had more reason to be pleased with, as they took 4 more points than Hadleigh from the game. Batting first, Stanford made a solid start. Jacob Tarlinton (72) was in sparkling form and received good support from young Sean Barker (16) as they added 71 for the first wicket in quick time. Colin Yeomans (35) carried on the good work, but a flurry of wickets set the home team back, as Dave Toplis (4-45) tightened things up. Chopper Truong (26) AND Clive Ballard (28) boosted things in the lower middle-order, before another flurry of wickets brought the innings to a close in the 50th over.

Hadleigh have a reputation for chasing well, but they appeared strangely un-ambitious on this occasion, perhaps fear of losing was the overriding factor. Grigg (48) gave them a decent start and 6 out of 8 of his colleagues who batted made it into double figures without pressing on. Admittedly, the Stanford bowling was pretty tight, with a miserly spell from Kevin Smith (17 overs 2-32), typifying the attack. So, despite receiving 50 overs in return, the Hadleigh challenge never really got off the ground as they settled for a draw. Stanford II 11 points   Hadleigh & Thundersley II 7 points

Stanford III  185-6  (40 overs)              Rayleigh Fairview  189-7  (39 overs)

Geoff Lake 43, Stuart Surridge 36                    Keith Hines 70

Luke Dennis 32no, Adrian Page 31no

With no League fixtures this week, a combined 3rd and 4th XI, took on Rayleigh Fairview 3rds in an entertaining and good-spirited match. Stanford skipper Geoff Lake (43) combined with Stuart Surridge (36) in a 76 run 2nd wicket partnership to take the Stanford score to 89-1 at the 20th over. Four wickets then fell for the addition of only 8 runs, at which point, Adrian Page (31no) dropped anchor. It gave the opportunity for two youngsters, Jon Barr (19) and Luke Dennis (32no) to play some shots. Page and Dennis added 67 in an unbroken 7th wicket partnership.

185 proved to be just a few short, as Fairview clinched victory on the last ball of the penultimate over. Keith Hines (70), rode his luck to make the bulk of the runs and although U13 Matt Drain (2-28) and John Harris (2-25) bowled tightly, the visitors just had enough in reserve to creep home.  Rayleigh Fairview won by 3 wickets.

Essex Sunday League

Stanford 220ao  (37.1 overs)                          Benfleet 201-6  (40 overs)

Ross Poulton 123, Lee Knight 41                     S.Pritchard 71, A.Pritchard 61no

Ross Poulton (123), totally dominated proceeding during the Stanford innings. Skipper Lee Knight had contributed 41 at the top of the order, but after he departed it was completely the Poulton Show. He scored all but 40 of the 163 runs added whilst he was at the crease, including 5 huge sixes and 18 fours.

220 should have been a gettable target for Benfeet, particularly with one short boundary. However, they appeared to be in a state of shock, allowing Ian Sanderson (2-16) and John Harris (1-25) to pick up cheap early wickets and have them on the back foot from the off. Steve Pritchard (71), did his best to re-build the innings, but Stanford retained control by bowling and fielding tightly. Andy Pritchard (61no) got Benfleet close, but in the end they didn’t have any Poulton power and finished 19 runs short. Stanford 18 points  Benfleet 9 points
