Stanford le Hope CC – Match Reports 9th September 2006

Shepherd Neame League

Old Southendians  97ao (37 overs)              Stanford 101-1 (15.1 overs)

Dion Bryant 5-47, Ross Poulton 3-21                Peter Gray 47no, Robert Page 35no

Stanford became Division 3 champions with this crushing defeat of Old Southendians, who were still harbouring hopes of a promotion spot themselves. Their hopes were soon crushed following their decision to bat first. Stanford’s Aussie, Dion Bryant, saved his best bowling for his last match for the club. He bowled an 18 over spell to return 5-47 in a performance of controlled aggression. The Old Boys had no answers and when his opening partner, Greg Barr, chipped in with the vital wicket of South’s skipper, Chris Bunce, resistance drained away from the home side. Left-arm spinner Ross Poulton cleared up with 3-21 as the Old Boys challenge crumbled.

The run-chase was a formality. Peter Gray (47) ensured there were no alarms, as he and partner Bill Poskitt Jnr (17) raced along at 6 an over. When Poskitt departed, the pace didn’t slacken, as Essex U17 Robert Page (35no) joined Gray to add 71 in quick time. Stanford were able to celebrate promotion immediately and the Championship a little later, when the news came that Harold Wood had failed to beat Old Brentwoods.

Stanford skipper, Michael Gray said after the game, ‘Today we were brilliant. There have been some great individual performances this season, but what has clinched it for us is the way everybody has contributed throughout the summer. This was a real team effort and we are looking forward to playing in Division 2 next year’.

Old Southendian II  209-9  (52 overs)            Stanford II 210-5  (38.5 overs)

Dave Smith 56, Neil Linfield 41             Mark Knight 77no, Robert Pearn 46

Sam Spooner 5-62                                         Matthew Page 29, A.Sasiadek 4-56

It was a day of double celebration for Stanford, as their second string clinched the 2nd promotion place, to climb into Division 2. Knowing a win would clinch things, Stanford skipper, Dean Hitchcock, had no hesitation in inserting Old Southendians when he won the toss. Daryl Woodford made an early breakthrough for the home team, but early joy was short-lived as the Old Boys consolidated through Dave Smith (56) and Neil Linfield (41) and it looked as though Stanford might have to chase a substantial total. However, Sam Spooner (5-62) entered the attack and whittled away at the visiting batsmen. He was helped by some smart fielding and with the help of a couple run-outs, Stanford kept the total within reach.

There was a steely determination about the Stanford run-chase. Opener Mark Knight (77no) set his stall out early. Whilst his opening partner, Mathew Page (29), dominated a stand of 34, Knight quietly entrenched himself, allowing the rest of the team to play around him. Rob Pearn (46) joined him for a key 2nd wicket stand of 106, which brought the win within sight. Sasiadek (4-56) caused a few alarms, but Knight began to unfurl his full range of shots to see his team home by 5 wickets.

Stanford III 160 ao (34.3 overs)         Hadleigh III 162-4 (33.1 overs)

Ken Grigg 8-24                                   G.Dawson 48no, L.Saxton 47

Hadleigh won the toss and inserted Stanford on a decent track at The Billet. The home team got off to a reasonable start hitting 44 in 9 overs, before wickets started to fall rapidly, as Ken Grigg (8-24 from 10.3 overs) bowled a superb spell. Jon Fuller and Ian Sanderson joint top-scored with 24 apiece, but Stanford were unable to keep Grigg out and succumbed for a total that was well short of being competitive.

Hadleigh openers, Dawson (48 not out) and Saxton (47) put Stanford to the sword early on in the reply as they added 74 in quick time. Dawson then settled to anchor the rest of the innings, as he saw Hadleigh home to a comfortable 4 wicket victory.

Stanford IV 124 ao                                               Leigh on Sea IV 125-9

Bill Poskitt Snr 34, Alan Ramsey 4-17        Ken Newton 35, John Sexton 26,

Laura Knight 4-32, Adrian Page 3-40

Bill Poskitt Snr (34) almost carried his bat as he played a lone defiant hand against some accurate Leigh bowling. Five Stanford batsman went without troubling the scorer and it was another resilient last wicket stand of 35 between Poskitt and Wilf Gansbuhler (18) that boosted the total to a still meagre 124. Poskitt became the last man to fall as he searched for a couple of batting points.

Ken Newton (35) gave Leigh a flying start in reply, but the run-out of skipper Ken Sandeman by Adam Stebbing, gave Stanford the breakthrough. Wickets fell steadily, as Laura Knight (4-32) found success in her 2nd spell. Skipper Adrian Page (3-40) supported her well as wickets tumbled regularly. The match crept towards a nail-biting finish as the 9th Leigh wicket fell with them still requiring 6 runs. However, youngster John Sexton (26no) kept his head as 4 maidens were bowled with the score tied, to see his side home.

Essex Sunday League

Stanford 95 ao                                                           Southend on Sea 96-4

After both teams in this game gained promotion in the Shepherd Neame League on Saturday, a rather hung-over gathering assembled in Southchurch Park to contest this Sunday League match. Stanford looked the worse for wear, as they crumbled at the hands of Khan. It was a short and sweet affair, leaving the Stanford players and supporters plenty of time to enjoy an early trip to the sea front for fish and chips and continue their celebrations at becoming Division 3 champions.

Although widely available, fish and chips have become particularly popular in seaside towns, for example here in Hunstanton, UK.
