Stanford
le Hope CC – Match Reports 10th June 2006 Shepherd Neame Essex League
Benfleet 248 – 4 (52overs) Stanford 248 – 7 (45 overs)Jess Hancock 86no, A Scott 46, M Tremain 40 Peter Gray 122, Lee Knight 36, Dion Bryant 35 Stanford were cruelly denied what would have been a great win, when skipper Michael Gray was given out ‘obstructing the field’, as he tried to make what would have been the winning run, from the last ball of the match. Benfleet bowler, Lewis, fielding from his own bowling, hurled the ball at the stumps as Gray tried to regain his ground. It hit his foot and ricocheted away and the umpire deemed this to be deliberate. So, all of Stanford’s hard work – and particularly that of Peter Gray (122) - was to no avail and they only garnered a meagre 5 points from the battle. Gray had battled throughout the innings, only to be stumped from the third ball of the final over, as he went for the winning runs. He received solid support from Dion Bryant, (35), Ross Poulton (24) and particularly from Lee Knight (36), with whom he shared a 5th wicket stand of 115, as they chased 8 an over for the last 20. Earlier, Benfleet had
batted solidly in the wilting heat, with their Aussie Jess Hancock (86no)
leading the way. There were good contributions from Scott (46) and Tremain (40),
as the Stanford bowlers toiled away on a batsman’s paradise. Mat Lewis’ 2-25
from 10 overs was an excellent effort, but the visitors were unable to enjoy the
sort of control in the field that they have exerted all season. Whilst they
maintain their position at the head of Division 3, there was a distinct ‘what
might have been’ feel about this match. Match drawn. Stanford 5 points

overs) W. Yousaf 52, J. Clack 32 Jacob Tarlinton 104no, Rob Pearn 54no Sam Spooner 6-43 Stanford’s second string continued their fine start to the season with another comfortable win. Old Parks elected to bat on a flat-looking track and seemed to have made a good decision as openers Yousaf (52) and Clark (32), added an untroubled 68 runs for the 1st wicket. The introduction of off-spinner Sam Spooner (6-43), changed all that. He snapped up Yousaf and no other batsman was able to come to grips with him. He bowled 17 unchanged overs, receiving fine support from John Hicks, whose 11 overs only yielded 16 runs for one wicket. 163 was at best a moderate
total, but Jacob Tarlinton (104no), made it look extremely inadequate, as he
assaulted the visiting bowling. His undefeated century included 18 boundaries.
Stand-in skipper Rob Pearn (54no) provided the support as Tarlinton unleashed
the fireworks. Stanford raced to the win in 25.1 overs, to retain leadership of
the division. Stanford 18 points

Old Parkonians 188 – 7 ((44 overs) Peter Victory 46, Mark Knight 29 V. Pandaya 51, C. Nutt 42 I. Bharuchi 3-17 Old Parks just bested the home team in this close run affair at the Billet. Having elected to bat, Stanford lost two early wickets, before Peter Victory (46) and Robin Monji (21) restored some order. Wickets fell regularly, particularly to Bharuchi (3-17), but Mark Knight (29) kept his head to steer his side to respectability, assisted by Old Parks generosity in contributing 46 extras to the total. Stanford also picked up
two early wickets, through Daryl Woodford and Ian Sanderson, but were undone by
a solid 3rd wicket partnership between Pandya (51) and Nutt (42).
Despite Matt Higgins and Jon Fuller picking up a couple of wickets each, Simpson
(32) made a telling contribution to help ease his side home by 3 wickets.

(29.3 overs) Adrian Page 6-14 Mark Couzens 21no After being on the wrong side of countless one-sided defeats, Stanford’s 4th string turned the tables on Wickford. Skipper Adrian Page (6-14) accounted for the first 6 home wickets to fall, before handing over to the youngsters. Paul Cross picked up two and U13s Matt Drain and Charlie Gleisinger grabbed one apiece to close out the innings. Stanford’s well known batting frailties would normally have made even 63 seem a reasonable total. However, a solid and extremely patient opening partnership of 33 in 20 overs between Arthur Ramdial and Bill Poskitt Snr set up the platform for Mark Couzens (21no) to strike some lusty blows to gain Stanford their first win in a long time.
