Williams (3-27) picked up three early wickets for the visitors and Stanford were struggling at 85-5. However, a splendid century by Dean Hitchcock and great support from Lee Knight (82no) in an unbroken partnership of 158 for the 6th wicket saw Stanford to a good total. Mark Pike (49) and Keith Baldock (47) looked to be mounting a good challenge, but a fine spell by Daryl Woodford (4-23) sparked a collapse and Stanford won by 38 runs. 6-71 A sparkling 151 from Grays opener Mike O’Neill was the mainstay of the visitor’s total – next best score was 16! Stanford chased well led by former Grays man and skipper for the day Wayne Simmons (50). There was good support through the order, but the wily Colin Pomphrett (6-71) kept the wickets falling. A mad scramble for the winning runs saw the visitors keep their heads best to clinch a thrilling 3 run victory. Sunday 6th

Page 34no President’s Day provided a feast of runs, despite a start delayed by the weather, as the Club & Ground sent down a strong side. Essex staffer Jahid Ahmed (105), clattered the ball to all parts, before being brilliantly run out by Robert Page. The visitor’s declared on a healthy 258, leaving Stanford with a tight run chase. They almost managed it, thanks to Bill Poskitt Jnr’s superb, undefeated 123. He dominated an opening partnership of 130 with Robert Page (43) to set up the platform for an unlikely win. However, Essex tightened up the bowling and picked up some quick wickets to slow down the chase. Needing 58 from only 5 overs, Stanford unleashed Matthew Page (38no), but his violent assault still left Stanford 8 runs shy. Match Drawn. |
