Stanford le Hope C.C. – Match Reports 20th May 2006 Shepherd Neame Essex League Stanford 151ao (45 overs)
Ongar 95ao (36 overs) Dion Bryant 52, Dean Mitchell
5-47
Dion Bryant 7-35 On a very poor Ongar track, runs were hard to come by and decent partnerships a rarity. Stanford managed two of the latter. Aussie Dion Bryant (52) and Bill Poskitt Jnr (17) added 67 for the 3rd wicket, Bryant taking the aerial route for 5 maximums in order to counteract the long, wet outfield. Ross Poulton dug in for 24, but could only watch aghast as 4 wickets tumbled at the other end for the addition of only 10 runs, as Dean Mitchell (5-47) continued his long, tight spell.121-9 was hardly a position of comfort, but the wise old head of Duncan Page (21no) once again came to the rescue of Stanford, as he shepherded last man Gary Sanderson, through a crucial last wicket partnership of 30. Considering the batting difficulties, 151 was a more than decent score and it proved far too much for the 10 men that Ongar fielded. Bryant continued his good form with the ball, seemingly becoming stronger as his 18 over spell progressed. His final return of 7-35 was just reward, with Sanderson completing a good personal day also, picking up the other 2 wickets to fall, as Stanford clinched a comfortable win. Stanford win by 56 runs. overs) Ross Darby 48, S. Selner 39 Sam Spooner 38, James Drain 33no Jacob Tarlinton 3-20, Kevin Smith 3-37 Chopper Truong 30, B. Stuart 4-52 This was a true nail-biter and a credit to the young Stanford team’s fighting spirit, as some inlikely batting heroes snatched a win with just 3 balls remaining in the game. They were chasing a formidable looking 182 total posted by the visiting Ongar team, in tricky conditions. This was founded on an opening partnership of 76 between skipper Ross Darby (48) and Selner (39). Kevin Smith (3-37) and Jake Tarlinton 3-20 regained a measure of control to keep the total in sight. Stanford’s reply began in
disastrous fashion. Only Rob Pearn (18) of the top order made double figures as
they slumped to 45-5. The home side were rescued from this perilous position by
Thanh Cuong ‘Chopper’ Truong (30) - an Aussie of Vietnamese extraction! –
and Kevin Smith (23). The good work was continued by Sam Spooner (38) and James
Drain (33no), the latter an U16 who played with great maturity. The pair were
facing a target of 8 an over for the last 7 overs and somehow kept the home side
in touch as they added 66 for the 8th wicket. Spooner was dismissed
in the penultimate over and last man Greg Barr was left facing, requiring 9 to
win from the last over. 3 balls later it was all over as Barr thumped the first
two for 4 and then scrambled a single to register a great comeback. Stanford
won by 2 wickets Stanford III
131-9 (52 overs)
Orsett III 97-7 (45 overs) Daryl Woodford 38, Mat Higgins 21no Lee Koyman 43no, Ian Sanderson 3-27 A Roberts 3-29, M Bennelick
3-23 Stanford had the better of a draw in this derby clash, played in slow and difficult conditions. Rain delayed the start by half an hour and Stanford struggled to make any impression against some tight bowling by Roberts (3-29) and Bennelick (3-23). It was only when Daryl Woodford (38) joined John Charman (18) that Stanford began to make an impression. This pair added 56 for the 5th wicket and Woodford continued to bat maturely until he became the 9th man out. Youngster Mat Higgins then took control, hitting an excellent 21no, which allowed Stanford to close their innings on 131-9. Orsett’s reply was even stickier than the wicket. Their top order was blasted away by Ian Sanderson’s first spell as he grabbed 3-27. Lee Koyman (43no) joined his dad Dave to bring some order to an innings that looked to be crumbling away. They stopped the rot, but never looked to even remotely threaten Stanford’s total as they hung on grimly for a draw. |
