Stanford le Hope CC – Match Reports 14th / 15th July 2007

1st XI at Leigh on Sea

Stanford  212-8  (52 overs)                                    Leigh on Sea  175-9  (47 overs)

Peter Gray 56, Matthew Page 42                     Dean Waller 66, Gary Sanderson 6-71

James Braithwaite 5-72

It was a much improved performance by Stanford  at Leigh, but still no elusive first league win of the season. They were denied by a battling last wicket partnership between Sexton and Giles that added 28 runs over the last 8 overs. Most disappointed player on the pitch was Sam Spooner, who spilled a chance in the penultimate over, having caught two outstanding catches earlier in the innings. Gary Sanderson’s marathon stint of 23 overs to take 6-71 was not wholly in vain, as Stanford picked up 12 points, but with only Dean Waller (66) of the home side able to make any really worthwhile contribution, their was an air of ‘what might have been’ around the Stanford camp.

Earlier in the day, it was Stanford’s middle order that gave them a decent platform. Opener Robert Page (29), got his team off to a reasonable start, but 4 wickets then tumbled for less than 30 runs. Matthew Page (42), Peter Gray (56) and Duncan Page (28no) ensured that the visitors clocked up maximum batting points for the first time this season, despite the best efforts of James Braithwaite (5-72). In the end, Stanford had to be content with a maximum scoring draw.

Stanford  12 points            Leigh on Sea 6 points

2nd XI at home to Leigh on Sea

Stanford II  195-9  (52 overs)                        Leigh on Sea II  196-2 (28.3 overs)

Adam Knight 44 no, Daryl Woodford 33            John Dyes 76no, Dave Liston 62no

Rob Bassett 7-62

Stanford made a steady start to the game as Sean Barker (27) and Mark Knight added 49 for the first wicket with few alarms. However, Rob Bassett proved to be an unwelcome guest at the Rec as he ripped out the middle order. At 130-8, things were looking critical for Stanford’s 2nd string. An excellent 8th wicket stand of 56, between young Daryl Woodford (33) and even younger Adam Knight (44no) seemed to have swung things back in Stanford’s favour as they boosted the total near the 200 mark.

Stanford’s hopes were also raised when Woodford picked up a couple of wickets early in the Leigh reply. They were soon to be dashed however, as John Dyas (76) and Dave Liston (62no) put together an undefeated partnership of 129, to seal the visitors 8 wicket victory in less than 29 overs.

Stanford II  6 points                Leigh on Sea II  18 points

3rd XI at home to Leigh on Sea

Leigh on Sea III  158ao  (44.4 overs)                  Stanford III  156ao  (52.4 overs)

Pete Luker 75                                                              Andy Powley 37

Stanford fell agonisingly short of clinching a win, as their last 3 wickets fell in the space of 6 balls. Chasing a moderate total, Stanford were rocked by tight opening spells from Attwood (3-19 and Sibley (2-42) as they crashed to 39-5. Jon Fuller (23 and U15 Harry Cook (24), repaired some of the damage. However, it was a dogged innings by Andy Powley (37), playing his first game for the club for 12 years, that swung the game Stanford’s way. With support from another old hand, Adrian Page (19), he inched the home side towards their target with few alarms. Needing 7 to win from two overs, Page was bowled trying to hit a 4 to level the scores. When Powley was bowled two balls later, also trying to hit the winning runs, it was anyone’s match. A snorter from Khokhar was too much for U13 Craig Ashley and Leigh clinched the win by two runs.

Earlier, they were indebted to Pete Luker (75), who was the only batsman to get to grips with the Stanford bowling. Next highest score was 14, as Dennis Wheatley (3-42), Matt Hasler, Powley and Page with a brace each made life tough for the rest of the Leigh line-up.

Stanford III  6 points       Leigh on Sea III   20 points

4th XI at Leigh on Sea

Stanford IV    87ao  (34.2 overs)                        Leigh on Sea IV  88-3  (16.2 overs)

                                                                        B.King 42no

Stanford’s 4th string again struggled with the bat, with only Arthur Ramdial and John Youngman (both with 19), making double figures. 87 was never a total to defend, and opener King’s 42no ensured that Leigh progressed with few alarms. Ricky Tavio (3-51) did his best to make life difficult for the home batsmen, but Leigh ran out  easy 7 wicket winners.

Stanford IV  1 point                  Leigh on Sea  IV   18 points

Sunday Friendly

Stanford 264-7   (40 overs)                        Old Sectonians 142ao  (36.2 overs)
James Drain 56, Sean Barker 55                Aslam 39,  Hamid 27,  Matt Hasler 4-19
Lee Knight 55no,Kevin Smith 33             Sam Spooner 2-15,  Ross Poulton 2-20
Adam Knight 27, Ross Poulton 25
Eastwell 2-63, Aslam 3-53

In a game played in good spirit, Stanford won the toss and elected to bat,. Openers Ross Poulton (25) and Kevin Smith (33) set about the bowling in an aggressive manner and added 58 for the first wicket inside 5 overs. Sean Barker (55) and James Drain (56) added 74 for the 3rd wicket. Drain departed just before drinks which left Barker to go on to reach his half century. He received good support from Adam Knight (27) with whom he shared a 50 partnership for the 5th wicket. The returning Eastwell broke the partnership when he bowled Barker which brought Stanford skipper Lee Knight (55no) to the crease. He and brother Adam added 37 for the 6th wicket before the latter was bowled, leaving Stanford 264-7 at tea.

Old Sectonians knew they had to start well and decided to take the same approach as the Stanford openers. Unfortunately for them, Matt Hasler was in fine form with some gentle away swing bowling he picked up 2 wickets in his first over and from there the task of achieving 264 was always going to be a tough one. Part time seamer Sam Spooner and Danny Tavio making his Sunday debut applied the pressure and soon Old Sectonians found themselves 55-6. A partnership of 64 between Aslam and Eastwell gave them some hope, but Poulton and Smith came on and ended any chance of a victory. Hasler returned to pick up the last wicket which grabbed the win for Stanford and gave him the excellent figures of 4-19.
