Stanford 'Do The Double'!!

Stanford Le Hope's indoor cricket team secured a magnificent 'Double' title success on Sunday by adding the Thurrock Sunday Indoor League title to the Thurrock Midweek Indoor League title that was won a fortnight ago. As with the Midweek league, the Sunday League title went down to the wire. Stanford went into their match with Grays & Chadwell knowing that a win on its own would not guarantee them the title. Pegasus & Corringham were 19 points in front after their win against Horndon so Stanford needed to beat Grays and take 5 or 6 wickets in the process.

Stanford's Sunday skipper Duncan Page won the toss and elected to bowl first. After a bit of a shaky start, Ian Sanderson (1-32) struck the first blow in his first over removing Lovejoy for a duck, but the Grays batsmen then showed their run scoring ability. Cohen (43*) and Leslie (31) both played well with some big shots mixed with excellent running which started to frustrate Stanford. After a run out from Ross Poulton and a brilliant catch from Matt Higgins of the bowling of Kevin Smith (2-21), Smith then dropped Leslie of his own bowling!! But he made amends by bowling him the following ball which left Stanford needing one more wicket. With the score at 110-4 with one ball to go, Poulton (1-32) bowled a viciously spinning ball that bamboozled Samwell (23) and a stunning stumping from Page secured the all important 5th wicket.

Stanford now knew that if they scored 111 runs in their 12 overs, they would be crowned champions. The two openers Alex Ellis (12) and Poulton (26*) started nervously but a combination of good fortune and poor fielding from Grays enabled Stanford to keep up with the required run rate. Once Higgins came in for the retired Poulton, the runs dried up somewhat and it looked at one point that Stanford were going to struggle, but Higgins (26*) and a real captains innings from Page (27*) turned the tide and it was left to Smith to 'ghost in’, and do what he did for the midweek win, and hit the winning runs courtesy of crunching four back past the bowler.
