1st XI 121 all out |

Ross Poulton 6-29 |
Kevin Smith 2-38 |
|
It was a fairly comfortable victory for Stanford
as they travelled to Southend. Home skipper Nigel Green elected to bat on a
soft-looking pitch and his team struggled for runs. Kevin Smith (2-38)
removed both openers cheaply, but good contributions from Conor Enderby (36)
and Phillip McIntosh (34) saw them on to a comfortable 89-2. It was then
that Stanford’s own captain took a hand. Ross Poulton’s deadly left-arm spin
had the home team in a whirl of their own as wickets tumbled. The last eight
wickets only added a further 32 runs as Poulton helped himself to 6-29
Chasing a smallish total can be tricky and
Stanford were wobbling slightly as openers John Home (3-43) and former
Stanford man Harry Morgan-James (1-24), had the visitors at 59-4. However,
there were no further alarms as Lee Knight (36no) and Michael Gray (40no)
saw Stanford through to a 6 wicket win. |

Southend’s second string were devastated by a
fantastic spell of bowling from Paul Reynolds. He bowled 15 overs with 2
maidens, to return the club’s best figures in recent years of 9-56. At one
point, the visitors were 37-6 and it was a stubborn 8th wicket
partnership of 73, between Richard Walcott (48) and Steve Eliot (26) that
kept them in the match at all. Reynolds returned to blow away the tail and
was grateful to a solid fielding performance to back him up, that included
three catches from young Harry Cook.
Stanford lost
an early wicket, but opener Mark Nuttall (50no) dropped anchor to provide a
solid base. He shared a 2nd wicket partnership of 83 with Matt
Higgins (41) and then watched Clive Ballard batter a quick 30no to clinch a
6 wicket win. |

Stanford’s 3rd XI posted another
excellent win at the Rec on Saturday. Benfleet skipper Deryck Povey decided
to bat, but probably regretted the decision as Daryl Woodford (5-33) ripped
into the top order. He enjoyed good support from David Tester (2-20) and Ben
Tarten (1-9) and it was only some stubborn resistance from Povey himself
(23) with Lee and David Parmenter (24 &35no) that allowed Benfleet to hold
out for 52 overs and return 142-8.
Stanford lost their skipper Geoff Lake early in
the reply, but he was able to put his feet up and look on with some
satisfaction as Sean Barker (69no) and Rob Pearn (57no), sealed an emphatic
9 wicket win. |

After winning the toss and
electing to bat Stanford were looking to post a decent total in the opening
sunday league game of the season after losing opener Leslie in the 2nd over
Kevin Smith (61) and Harry Maher (57) layed the platform for the innings
with a fine partnership of 113 for the 2nd wicket. After both were dismissed
the middle order looked to up the run rate and boost the score over 200 Matt
Higgins (21*) and Matthew Page (28*) did just that and brought the total at
the end of 40 overs to 219-6 with Hunt 2-33 the chief wicket taker for
Southendians.
The Old Southendians reply started in unspectacular fashion as Barr (2-20)
and Higgins (1-9) bowled tightly and removed the top order and soon the
hosts found themselves 44-4, Sunday skipper Lucas (47) and saturday 1s
captain Johnson (41) rebuilt the innings with a stand of 99 for the 5th
wicket before a fine catch from Ben Tarten off the bowling of Maher and a
full spinning delivery from Poulton ended their stays at the crease, the
tail was mopped up in quick succession and having bowled out their opponents
for 137 Stanford Sunday Eleven registered their first win of the season. |
