Stanford’s 1st
XI picked up and impressive win against West Essex to get their league
programme off to a flyer. They were indebted to a big century stand between
former skipper Michael Gray (74) and new captain Ross Poulton (65) as they
recovered from 56-5 to post a respectable 211 all out total. The early
damage had been done by Irfan Riaz (4-60) and Kamran Riaz (2-65), with Neil
Dial (3-22) nipping in to wipe up the tail.
West Essex
made a positive start, but once Kevin Smith (2-42) had removed the openers,
it was a chance for Stanford’s new Aussie, Harry Maher to make up for a
disappointing batting debut. Realising early on that he needed to keep the
ball full, he devastated the visitor’s batting line-up to register 5-33.
Ross Poulton (3-19) completed a fine all-round game to steer his team to a
comfortable 95 run win. |

Stanford’s 2nd string were disappointed not to take advantage of
a flat batting track at Orsett. Skipper Andy Powley said afterwards:- ‘It
was a 250 run pitch and we didn’t bat well enough on it. Although Orsett
kept things tight, we had enough depth of batting to have done better’.
Orsett openers George Pavitt (5-37) and Glen Harris (3-55), made life tough
for the batsmen, with only Dean Hitchcock (37) really coming to terms with
their accuracy. Fortunately, the tail wagged well, with a 40 run partnership
from last pair Ian Sanderson (28) and Daryl Woodford (16no) at least giving
the visitors something to bowl at.
Stanford were left to rue several missed chances in the field
as the Orsett opening pair virtually won the game on their own. Mohammed
Shaquile (73) and skipper Nick Henry (78), made the most of their
opportunities as they took their team to the brink of victory. Only a late
Harry Cook strike prevented the humiliation of a 10 wicket defeat for
Stanford. |

Stanford 3rds
scored an emphatic victory at Hadleigh as they endeavour to climb back up
the rankings having suffered relegation for the past two seasons. A solid
bowling performance, soon had Hadleigh on the rack as Stanford openers Jon
Fuller (3-22) and Ben Tarten (3-43) worked their way through the home side’s
upper order. Stephen Stone (56) played an almost solo hand as he tried to
guide his side to a respectable total, but Charlie Gleisinger and Luke
Dennis mopped up the tail as they crashed to an all out total of 144.
The early loss
of skipper Geoff Lake, hardly ruffled Stanford’s feathers as Neil Fuller
(85no) played the dominant role in a century partnership with Peter Victory
(33) that virtually won the game for the visitors. A couple of late wickets
for Jonathon Snelling being scant consolation for the home side, as Stanford
eased to a comfortable 7 wicket win. |
