A
dramatic last ball victory, saw Stanford maintain their 100% start to the
season. It was Aussie Harry Maher who clinched the win with a boundary, in a
see-saw match. Two Kevin Smith wickets and a run out had put Stanford firmly
in the driving seat as Old Brentwoods began their innings. However, a big
century stand between Sarwar (106no) and Khawaia (57)
pulled things round
for the home side. Khan (27) and Chowdray (32), then shared 50 partnerships
with Sarwar, before the Old Boys declared after 50 overs.
Peter Gray (57) and Lee Knight (38) continued their excellent early season
form as they shared an 84 run partnership for the second wicket. After that,
Maher (89no)
took charge. He remained unflustered as wickets fell steadily at the other
end and when he was joined by old hand Duncan Page (11no) he was able to
lead the team to the tightest of wins. |

Stanford’s second string cantered to an easy victory at the Rec. Old
Brentwoods had no answer to Stanford’s quartet of medium pacers. Paul
Reynolds (4-36), Josh Reid (3-12), Daryl Woodford (2- 16) and Ian Sanderson
(1-25), blew away any resistance from the Old Boys in quick time, with only
Singh (28) and Miller (23) registering significant scores.
95 was not a particularly challenging target. Sean Barker (41no), continued
his run of good form, adding 50 with Dean Hitchcock (21) to virtually seal
the win and keep the 2nds in the top three. |

An exciting game at the Rec ended with honours even between these closest of
old rivals. With one ball left in the game, any result was possible. Horndon
needed one wicket, Stanford needed 2 runs and a tie or draw were both
feasible. A dot ball from the experienced Terry Hills sealed the latter
result. Horndon’s top order were in fine form earlier. Gary Ginsburgh (48)
and Tom Stone (41) shared an opening stand of 69. This was built on by Terry
Williams (41) and Jack Plane (23), as Horndon looked to post a formidable
total. However, Jon Fuller (6- 42) and Greg Barr (3-35) reigned things in
and swept away the lower order to leave the visitors just shy of the 200
mark.
Neil Fuller (27) and Peter Victory (22) gave Stanford a solid start as they
began the chase, but 4 quick wickets swung things back in Horndon’s favour.
Young Sam Sewell (45) joined forces with Ian Rudder (15) and Geoff Lake (17)
to get Stanford within range. However, James Stitson (5-46) worked his way
through the batsmen, to leave Horndon as slight favourites again before Greg
Barr (26no) almost nicked the match. |

The extra responsibility produced a great knock from Stanford’s stand-in
skipper Neil Doherty (89no), registering only his second fifty plus score
for the club, which sealed an unexpected win. He had excellent support from
David Ashley (21) and especially U16 Ryan Smith (36), with whom he shared a
partnership of 102 for the third wicket. In the end, the win was a
comfortable one, with 3 overs and 6 wickets in hand.
Earlier, Bills had posted a more than respectable total, as
Stanford put together a super display of ground fielding in which youngsters
Smith and Andy Freeman were outstanding. Freeman (2-6) also finished the
innings off as the home side searched for 200. However, bowling honours went
to John ‘Chopper’ Harris, who battled his way into form with 6-55. Nigel
Staplehurst (69) was the mainstay of the Billericay innings after Mab Smith
(27) and Chris Clarke (21) had given them a solid start. |

On a fine summers day at the 'Rec',
Stanford hosted Southend in their second league game of the season. Upon
winning the toss, captain Lee Knight had no hesitation in batting first
against an under strength Southend side who had to start with only 9
players.
Openers Sean Barker (38) and Kevin Smith (56) set about the bowling in the
early overs and in no time at all had registered a partnership of 120.
However Southend fought back and claimed the wickets of both openers and
number 3, Matt Higgins, in the space of 2 overs and at 126-3, gave
themselves a chance of getting back into the match. Skipper Lee Knight then
joined Josh Reid at the crease and between them, batted the remaining 25
overs mixing clean hitting with precise placement and assisted by some poor
fielding from the visitors, they registered a huge unbeaten stand of 264 for
the 4th wicket with Reid hitting 137 not out his maiden hundred and Knight
115 not out finishing the innings on a club record 390-3.
Southend's reply started in equally aggressive fashion. Kenton (53) and Khan
(110) attacked from ball 1 and took the score past 100 in the 12th over.
Under 15 Ben Tarten made the breakthrough and bowled well in his 6 over
spell with figures of 2-50, At the other end Khan was punishing anything
slightly off line and length and didnt take long to record the 3rd hundred
of the game. He made 110 before holeing out in the deep off the bowling of
Barr, Elliot (37 not out) Callaway (24) and Graves (22) provided some
resistance until Matthew Higgins (3-6) came on and abruptly ended
proceedings with a superb Hattrick the second of his career. |
