Match Week Sixteen

SLHCC 1st XI 157 - 9 v Benfleet 1st XI 156 - 9
Lee Knight 44 Paul Reynolds 21*   Ross Poulton 4 - 48 Harry Maher 4 - 67

The Stanford 1st XI now only need 3 more points from their remaining 2 fixtures to guarantee 2nd Division cricket next year and could even sweeten this further by being crowned champions, after a narrow victory against top of the table Benfleet. Stanford lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. After a slow start from the Benfleet batsmen, it was the usual bowling combination of Captain Ross Poulton (4-48) and Aussie Harry Maher (4-67) that restricted the Benfleet total to 156 of 52 overs. Ray Gipson (42) and Sean Pritchard (30) were the main contributors to the home teams score.

In response, Stanford lost an early wicket but Dave Noble (19) and Lee Knight (44) steadied the ship and it was looking like a comfortable run chase. However, a great spell of bowling from Andrew Scott (6-46) destroyed the middle order and with over 30 runs still to get and only one wicket remaining, Stanford looked like they had handed the opposition the win. But young Matt Higgins (10*) and Paul Reynolds (21*) had other ideas with both batsmen batting brilliantly, they steered the team to a 1 wicket victory to jubilant celebrations.

SLHCC 2nd XI 203 all out v Buckhurst Hill 2nd XI 205 - 5
Ian Sanderson 56* Josh Reid 43   Ian Sanderson 1 - 23 James Drain 1 - 25

Buckhurst Hill 2nd XI were the visitors to Stanford Rec on Saturday with both teams knowing how important a win would be to their promotion hopes. The away team won the toss and strangely decided to bowl first on a ‘road-like’ looking pitch. Stanford lost a couple of early wickets with the ever reliable Josh Reid (43) being the only top order batsmen making it past 12. A great partnership from cousins Ian Sanderson (56*) and the returning James Drain (21) helped Stanford reach the 200 mark for maximum batting points.

Josh Armstrong (68) and Alan Dantes (43*) were two of the three main contributors to the away teams run chase with the third being an Incredible 59 extras, 42 of which being wides. From one of the strongest bowling attacks in the league, the Stanford players couldn’t quite believe that they had bowled so poorly with this ultimately costing them the game.

SLHCC 3rd XI 249 - 6 v Brentwood 5th XI 134 all out
Neil Fuller 118 Geoff Lake 55   Jon Fuller 3 - 13 Colin Knight 3 - 43

Neil Fuller's 2nd century of the season helped the 3rd XI keep their hopes of promotion up with victory against Brentwood 5th XI. A 151 run opening stand between Fuller (118) and Captain Geoff Lake (55) gave the home side a perfect start to the match after being asked to bat first by the opposition. Youngster Sam Sewell (24) continued his fine season by helping set Brentwood 250 runs for victory.

The away side started positively with Andrew Maxwell (38) and Horswill (15) putting on 41 for the first wicket. But they were both soon removed by Colin Knight (3-43) as he, John Harris (3-51) and Jon Fuller (3-13) each took three wickets and eventually wrapped the victory up by 115 runs.
