Match Week Seventeen

SLHCC 1st XI 153 - 1 v Woodford Green 1st XI 149 all out
Lee Knight 62* Peter Gray 56*   Harry Maher 4 - 45 Ross Poulton 3 - 48

Stanford went into this game needing 3 points to secure promotion back into Division 2. With Woodford Green winning the toss and batting Stanford were eager to pick up the 7 wickets required for promotion. Opening pair Matt Higgins and Kevin Smith bowled with control and quickly had the visitors in trouble at 29-3. This, however, brought Iqbal (60) and Hawkes (29) together who scored quickly and benefited from some uncharacteristic errors from Peter Gray. Iqbal was to fall to Harry Maher who was unlucky not to pick up a hat trick in the same over when he removed Sayeed first ball and then almost had Aanensen LBW but, fortunately for the batsmen, there was a little inside edge. Woodford Green were eventually all out for 149 with Maher finishing with 4-45 and was backed up by Ross Poulton with 3-48.

Stanford’s innings got of to a flyer with David Noble hitting boundary’s at will. After he fell Peter Gray and Lee Knight set about the total with familiar ease as they put on an unbroken 127 run partnership, Gray finishing with 56no and Knight 62no. With that victory Stanford were now guaranteed to be playing Division 2 cricket next term and the celebrations could begin. Skipper Ross Poulton said

' This is a great day for not only the 1st eleven but the whole club. Everyone at the club has worked hard this year and it has paid off. I would also like to thank all the players who have played under me this year as they have been a joy to captain, even Peter Gray.'

SLHCC 2nd XI 208 - 9 v Woodford Green 2nd XI 157 all out
Mark Nuttall 59 Greg Barr 25   Greg Barr 5 - 16 Ian Sanderson 2 - 28

The 2nd XI kept up their slim hopes of promotion with a maximum 20 point victory over Woodford Green. After a couple of early wickets from Ian Sanderson (2-28) and Daryl Woodford (1-47), Green batsmen Riann Veldtman (36) and Charl Jordan (55) looked at one point like they might chase down Stanford’s score but the introduction of Greg Barr stopped that. Figures of 5 for 16 shows just how well he bowled as one after another, Barr ripped through the home sides batting to leave them 51 runs short.

Earlier, vice captain Mark Nuttall hit his 2nd half century of the season with a solid and patient 59 backed up with 6 other batsmen chipping in with double figure scores to get Stanford to 208 after 52 overs.

SLHCC 3rd XI 181 - 5 v Walthamstow CC 4th XI 179 - 6
Rob Pearn 63* Brett Ingram 47   John Harris 4 - 48 Ryan Smith 1 - 31

The 3rd XI knew that a win was imperative if they stood any chance of promotion and that’s exactly what they did. Walthamstow won the toss and decided to bat but that looked the wrong decision early on as 3 wickets fell for 11 runs. Captain Tim Taylor hit an unbeaten 50 as the Stanford bowling attack kept the score down well with some excellent bowling most notably, John Harris who after 18 overs had figures of 4 for 48.

In reply, Stanford lost leading run scorer Neil Fuller for 11 early on but a brilliant unbeaten 63 from Rob Pearn aided by Sam Sewell (24), Neil Doherty (23) and Bret Ingram (47) enabled Stanford to ease to victory by 5 wickets.
