Match Week Eight

SLHCC 1st XI 144 - 3 v Ongar 1st XI 143 all out
Peter Gray 81* Alex Ellis 28   Sam Spooner 3 - 35 Harry Maher 3 - 46

A comfortable victory over Ongar saw Stanford 1st continue their promotion push. A solid bowling and fielding performance was the key to restricting the home side. 3-46 from Aussie Harry Maher and two wickets from Kevin Smith, combined with a needless run-out to leave Ongar reeling at 77-6. Blake Hall (41no), marshalled the lower order to achieve a more respectable total, before Sam Spooner (3-35) wrapped the innings up.

Peter Gray (81no) was in no mood to let a winning opportunity slip. He shared a positive half-century partnership with Alex Ellis for the first wicket and then made sure of the victory in just over 31 overs. Blake Hall (3-53) again made a valiant effort for his team, but was fighting a lone battle as Stanford eased to a comfortable victory.

SLHCC 2nd XI 156 - 6 v  Ongar 2nd XI 155 - 7
Greg Barr 34 Drew Robinson 31   Josh Reid 3 - 18 Ian Sanderson 1 - 10

It was obviously a tough day for batting at Stanford Rec. First up, Ongar toiled away for 52 overs to declare at 155-7. Opener Matt Reynolds (55) was the mainstay of the innings, with Josh Reid (3-18) returning the best bowling figures.

Then came Stanford’s turn. Whilst everyone made a double figure score, no-one could build a substantial innings as wickets fell regularly to Peter Ellis (6-66). It was Drew Robinson (31) and Greg Barr (34) that brought Stanford close, before Matthew Page and Paul Reynolds closed the visitors out. It means that Stanford’s second string maintain their challenge for promotion with a sixth win of the season.

SLHCC 3rd XI 200 - 7 v  Ardleigh Green 5th XI 78 all out
Rob Pearn 77* Peter Victory 29   John Harris 5 - 47 John Fuller 4 - 9

Stanford 3rds also kept themselves in the hunt for promotion with a win against Ardleigh Green. Having been inserted, Stanford made solid progress. Rob Pearn (77no) shored up the innings with a patient knock and received good early support from Peter Victory (29). Skipper Geoff Lake declared as soon as the home side made 200.

After tea, Ardleigh Green were unable to resist against the demon bowling of John Dorrington-Harris, whose swing completely bamboozled the batsmen. With Young Ben Tarten also picking up an early victim, it looked as if no other bowler would get a look-in. However, Jon Fuller came on after Tarten’s spell and helped himself to 4-9 to send Green tumbling to a 122 run defeat.

SLHCC 4th XI 200 - 1 v Leigh on Sea 5th XI 129 all out
David Ashley 77* Ryan Smith 30*   Charlie Gleisinger 4 - 17 James Hogger 3 - 26

Leigh skipper Trevor Bull must have been regretting his decision to insert the visitors as his team struggled in the Saturday heat. Batting hero for Stanford was David Ashley (77no), registering his maiden fifty in any form of cricket. He outscored Adrian Page (30), with whom he shared a 102 run opening stand. There was no relief for Leigh after Page went, as Ashley moved smoothly on with support from Ryan Smith (30).

200 was always going to be a tough ask for Leigh, but they made a positive start, standing at 42-1 and then 82-2, with skipper Bull (31) in bullish mood. A fine spell from James Hogger(3-26) broke the back of the batting, with Charlie Gleisinger mopping up most of the tail and clinging on to a brilliant catch from the bowling of John Youngman to complete the win.
