Smith's Six Secures Stanford's Success

The Thurrock indoor midweek competition experienced a nail biting finish to the 09 season with Belhus A and Stanford playing against each other knowing the victors would be crowned champions. Belhus started the match 9 points ahead so it was an important toss for both captains to win, which Stanford skipper Kevin Smith did and duly inserted Belhus in to Bat.

Belhus started positively with some well judged running leading them to 30 of the first 3 overs. A run out from Smith and a wicket from James Drain (1-28) gave Stanford some hope and with Sam Spooner bowling very well, Belhus started to panic. Enter Ross Poulton who accounted for the next 4 wickets with two caught and bowled, one bowled and a brilliant stumping from wicket keeper Lee Knight that gave Poulton figures of 4-17 that left Belhus 87 All Out.

The Stanford openers started as they have all season by building a solid 1st wicket partnership. Stanford's top scorer on a Wednesday, Alex Ellis, weighed in again with 28 not out with Lee Knight hitting some great shots in his 17. Two wickets in quick succession from Fogg (2-20) rocked Stanford slightly as the runs dried up. But Stanford's lower order took their chance and with 8 runs required for victory, Smith (17*) hit two singles and then followed that with a slightly 'Mooish' six to win the game to delight of all the team.

All the team then went down to the pub for a Celebratory pint to toast their success as the skipper was Paying!!!

A BIG thanks to everyone who played some part this season as everyone's contribution helped the team to the Title
