Stanford le Hope CC - Match Reports 3rd August 2007

Shepherd Neame Essex League

1st XI at home to Harlow

Stanford 219 – 7 (52 overs)                         Harlow  220 – 5  47.3 overs)

Ross Poullton 40, Matthew Page 32                        Nilesh Odedra  117no, Marc Lewis 3-61

Neil Butler 3-69

A solid Stanford batting performance saw them scale the dizzy heights of the 200 mark for only the second time this season. Father and son combo, Duncan (15) and Robert Page (25) added 48 for the first wicket. Ross Poulton (40) and Matthew Page (32) gave the middle order some stability, which allowed Michael Gray (23) and Marc Lewis (19no) to hit out at the end to boost the total. Neil Butler (3-69) was the visitor’s most successful bowler.

Unfortunately for Stanford, Harlow had Nilesh Odedra (117no) in their team. He opened and closed the innings on his way to a stylish century. Which made his team mates appear fairly ordinary. Stanford were left to rue a couple of dropped catches that may have turned the game, as Harlow ran out 5 wicket winners.

2nd XI at Shenfield

Stanford II  140ao (39.5 overs)              Shenfield II  143-3  (16.1 overs)

James Drain 61, John Kliber 6-42                 Mike Allen 74, Lee Tredgett 44

Stanford’s second string were simply outclassed at Shenfield. A splendid 61 from youngster James Drain was the highlight of the Stanford innings. Only Mark Nuttall (23) of the rest of the batsmen made any real impression as they were rushed out for 140 by the controlled seamers of John Kliber (6-42)

An early strike by Ian Sanderson gave Stanford some early hope, but that was soon dashed as Mike Allen (74) and Lee Tredgett (44) set about the bowling in a whirlwind century partnership, that sealed a 7 wicket win for Shenfield in less than 17 overs.

3rd XI at Old Parkonians

Old Parkonians III   249 – 7     (46 overs)            Stanford III  163 – 8  (46 overs)

Alex Grayburn 132, Andy Bouquet 50            Adrian Page 41, Geoff Lake 41

Adrian Page 4-71                                            Alex Grayburn 6-28

With only four of the regular 3rd team playing, Stanford emerged with a more than creditable draw in a match that was dominated by one player. Stanford had good cause to wonder why Alex Grayburn (132 & 6-28) was playing in this standard of cricket. Old Parks must certainly have an excellent reserve of talent in the higher echelons of the club! The day began brightly as Stanford had 5 of the opposition back in the hutch for only 43, as Adrian Page (4-71) and Jon Fuller (2-10) kept a tight rein. They couldn’t remove stubborn opener Andy Bouquet (50) however and it was he who hept Grayburn company, as he violently lashed the bowling to all parts of the ground. Their 180 run partnership took the game completely out of reach of Stanford.

The visitors made the worst possible start as they lost Fuller in the first over. Jon Barr (27) played a decent cameo innings, but the match was saved by the gritty determination of old hands Geoff Lake (41) and Adrian Page (41). They defied the speed and movement of Grayburn until he was rested. He made a swift return however and eventually accounted for both batsmen. However, the tail stood firm and secured a hard fought draw.

Stanford III  5 points                                      Old Parkonians III  11 points

4th XI at home to Hutton

Hutton V  245-6  (44 overs)                          Stanford IV   57ao  (18.4 overs)

Gilder 49, Maull 48, Watson 47                   Carpenter 3-2, Jon Maull 3-7

Matthew Drain 3-51

Hutton’s 5th string provede far too strong for a Stanford 4th XI shorn of 8 regulars. Gilder (49), Maull (48) and Watson (47) all just failed to break the half-century barrier, but Hutton still rattled up 245-6. Highlight of the bowling was young Matthew Drain’s 3-51.

Stanford’s innings reflected the inexperience of the team. 6 players registered a duck as they were shot out for only 57. Jon Maull (3-7), Carpenter (3-2) and Darling (2-3) showing little mercy as Hutton registered a 188 run win.

Stanford IV   2  points                                              Hutton V  20 points

Stanford Festival of Cricket

Stanford’s cricket Festival kicked off on Friday against local rivals Grays & Chadwell. Stanford posted 207, thanks to a late rally by James Drain (41). The visitors kept in the match all the way, but fell 15 runs short in the end. Some consolation for the Grays boys was the fact that they easily outdid Stanford in the drinking and karaoke stakes during the evening!

Sunday’s Super sixes was another fine day, with a team captained by Daryl Woodford eventually emerging triumphantly. The event may be extended next year with Stanford’s second square becoming available and will either retain the ‘Sixes’ format, or become a 20/Twenty competition.

Highlight of the week was the President’s day game on Monday when Stanford hosted the Essex Club & Ground team. Stanford President Ron Yardley hosted an excellent day’s cricket. The Club & Ground posted 202-9, thanks to half-centuries from Michael Beatty and Neil Chick. Despite the early loss of the Page brothers, Lee Knight (40), James Drain (32) and Kevin Smith (22) scraped together enough runs for the home side to edge a two wicket win. Mr Yardley thanked everyone for a hugely enjoyable day, singling out Georgie Page and Julie Knight for their tremendous organisational effort.
