Stanford le Hope CC – Match Reports 28th July 2007

1st XI at Woodford Wells

Stanford 117ao  (47.2 overs)                                    Woodford Wells 118 – 2 (21.5 overs)

Robert Page 35, Jeremy Mordrick 6-31

It was another painful day for a patched up Stanford side as they took on high-flying Woodford Wells. Having been inserted by the home side, Stanford made a decent start against some sharp bowling. Opener Robert Page (35), shared decent stands with his brother Matthew (15) and father Duncan (17), to see the visitors to 65-1. Far too typically for this season, there followed a major collapse, to 75-7, as Jeremy Mordrick (6-31) took charge. The tail resisted bravely, but 117 was never going to prove to be a challenge.

The Wells lost an early wicket as U16 Ian Sanderson picked up his first senior league wicket on 1st team debut to a fine Ross Poulton catch. Poulton himself took the only other wicket as Rees (35), Sims (33no) and Rogers (33no) saw their team home comfortably.

Stanford 1st  0 points                     Woodford Wells 1st  18 points

(Point of interest: There were four Pages in the team. Brothers Duncan & Adrian and Duncan’s sons Matthew & Robert. Two Knights, father Mark & son Lee and the Sanderson brothers Gary & Ian)

2nd XI at home to Westcliff

Westcliff 2nd  273 - 4  (39.2 overs)                        Stanford 2nd  190ao  (49.4 overs)

Dave Harding 141                                         Luke Dennis 54, Dean Hitchcock 50

Westcliff’s 2nd Aussie, Dave Harding (141) had a field day against a team shorn of 7 of the previous weeks’ team. His century was a swift and pretty brutal affair, with all of the Stanford bowlers suffering. Law (35) and Havens (34no) played minor supporting roles.

Stanford were unlikely to chase down such a massive total and as their first two wickets went for a single run, it looked even more unlikely. However, Luke Dennis (54) and skipper Dean Hitchcock (50) put together an 87 run partnership for the third wicket. Andy Powley (37no) marshalled the tail so that Stanford, although beaten by 83 runs, were certainly not disgraced.

Stanford 2nd  4 points                                 Westcliff 2nd  20 points

3rd XI at home to Benfleet 3rd

Stanford 3rd  111ao (43 overs)                        Benfleet 3rd  112 – 4 (30.2 overs)

Jon Barr 28, Jon Fuller 25,                         Martin Willis 33no, Gary Smith 4-30

Peter Hitchcock 4-33

With 7 fourth teamers drafted in, Stanford skipper Geoff Lake elected to bat, hoping to put a score on the board to pressurise Benfleet. After a steady opening partnership of 32, Stanford lost their way , with wickets falling at regular intervals, particularly to the bowling of  Peter Hitchcock (4-33). Only Jon Fuller (25) and Jon Barr (28) posted decent scores as Stanford crumbled to 111 all out.

In reply, Gary Smith bowled impressively to take 4-30, but no other Stanford bowler was successful as Benfleet cruised to a comfortable 4 wicket win, led by Martin Willis (33no).

Stanford 3rd  1 point                                   Benfleet 3rd  18 points

Stanford were unable to raise a 4th team to play Orsett, but did play a friendly 20/Twenty against their partners in the Stanford Recreation Ground User Group, Stanford Rugby Club, on Sunday. An enjoyable time was had by all and it was generally agreed that the Cricket club won, although there was some dispute about whether the rugby boys had scored two or three hundred in their innings. Let’s hope that the scores are better kept when the cricket club attempt the reverse rugby fixture!
