XI at home to Walthamstow Stanford
171ao (55.3 overs)
Walthamstow 172 – 3
(26.4 overs) Lee Knight 56, Greg Harris
6-60
Rob Oram 64no, Asif Bala 67 Dave Burnage 4-41 Stanford’s patchy batting
performance again left Stanford struggling to compete. A defiant 56 from Lee
Knight and useful contributions from Robert Page (28) and Ross Poulton (27). The
latter shared the best stand of the innings with 81 for the 5th
wicket, but the tight bowling of Greg Harris (6-60) and Dave Burnage (4-41)
meant that Stanford were always a long way behind the clock. Skipper Andrew
Robinson was happy to forgo the meagre couple of batting points that his side
had earned and bat past 52 overs. A rattle of wickets however meant that the
visitors had plenty of time to chase the lowly score. Two quick strikes by Greg
Barr and Gary Sanderson gave the home team some early hope. This was quickly
dashed by a third wicket partnership of 131 between Rob Oram (64no) and Asif
Bala (67), who effectively clinched the visitor’s 7 wicket win. Stanford

II 121 – 6
(28 overs) Matt Higgins 54, Reynolds
4-71
Quilter 37, Ian Sanderson 4 – 27 Mendes 4 – 32 Matt Higgins (54) and James
Drain (30), were the only Stanford players to make double figures in this local
Derby. Orsett openers Mendes (4-32 and Reynolds (4-71) were in miserly mood as
they bowled 33 overs between them. Higgins’ knock showed great promise and
maturity for an U15, but even with his and Drains’ contribution, the total
still looked meagre. It looked a more daunting
prospect for Orsett however, when U16 Ian Sanderson (4-27) ripped out the first
three wickets. Quilter (37) and Tibbet (19) combined to repair the damage,
before Sanderson was re-called to the attack to bowl Quilter. There were no more
alarms for Orsett however as they inched home by 4 wickets. Stanford

XI at Brentwood Stanford III
83ao (38.2 overs)
Brentwood IV 86 – 0
(16.4 overs) Geoff Lake 23, Neil Webb
5-16
C.Stockwell 48no, T.Jones 26no Stanford could have been
saved by a thunderstorm that flooded the ground 5 minutes after the match
finished, if skipper Geoff Lake had insisted on taking tea at the appointed
time. To have done so would have been a churlish gesture in a game that
Brentwood completely dominated. Stanford struggled with the bat to make any
headway against really tight bowling. Lake (23) did his best and at 59-2,
Stanford looked comfortable enough, but flattered to deceive as wickets tumbled
to Neil Webb (5-16). 83 was never a realistic
total to defend as Brentwood openers Stockwell (48no) and Jones (26no), dashed
ever more frantically at the bowling, to just beat the growling clouds and
emphatically beat Stanford by 10 wickets. Stanford

IV 110 – 9 (45 overs) C.Newland 61, John Youngman
3-34 Bill
Poskitt Snr 32, J.Filtness 4-23 Marc Easter 3-24 The 4ths battling draw was
the best result of the weekend for the Stanford club, who haven’t made the
most auspicious of starts to the season. It was a good effort in the field to
restrict Hornchurch to an all out total of 180. John Youngman (3-34) and Marc
Easter (3-24) led the way with the ball, whilst Horns relied on opener Newland
(61) for the bulk of their runs. Stanford’s reply was
built around a defiant 32 from veteran opener Bill Poskitt Snr. However, the
rest of the batting struggled against tight visiting bowling, with Filtness
(4-23) leading the way. At 81-9, with plenty of overs to go, U13 Charlie
Gleisinger (15no), joined Wilf Gansbuhler (19no) in an unlikely, but heroic
partnership, that staved off defeat and restored some pride to the Stanford
outfit. Stanford
