Asif Abbas 6-19 Stanford crashed to a heavy
defeat against their high-flying neighbours. Having inserted the visitors, The
Stanford bowling attack did really well to keep a lid on things. The opening
pair of Gary Sanderson and Greg Barr bowled 42 of the delivered overs between
them. Whilst Sanderson picked up a couple of wickets, Barr’s nil return was
much less than he deserved. Aided by a couple of run-outs, perpetrated by the
returning Marc Lewis, the Basildon batsmen struggled to make an impact. However,
Tony Alam (73no) kept his head and patience to allow the visitors to declare
when they got over the 200 mark. A sharp shower delayed the
re-start and livened up the pitch and Basildon’s seamers enjoyed some early
success with 3 quick wicket. Matt Lewis (29) and Ross Poulton (24) looked to
repair the damage, but the introduction of Basildon spinner Asif Abbas stifled
any chance the homesters may have had. In 7 overs, he returned 6-19 to bring the
innings to a crashing halt to secure a 110 run victory for his team. Stanford 1st

It was a similar story for
Stanford’s 2nd string as they journeyed the few miles to Mopsie’s
Park. Having decided to bat, someone in the Stanford team had to play a big
innings. A few of the team made starts, but with 20 being the top score it was
always going to be a struggle to post a competitive total. Dave Bedford (4-20)
and Chris Clarke-Irons (3-29) ensured their was no joy for the visitors. The
only batting highlight was the entrance of U15 Adam Knight at 76-7. He battled
away with the rest of the tail to post 20no and at least get the total into
treble figures. The Basildon chase was a
formality. Daryl Woodford picked up a couple of wickets, but Singleton (41) and
Marder (28no) secured a comfortable 8 wicket win for the home team. Stanford 2nd

Jon Fuller 3-35 Dave Johnson 5-55 Stanford were asked to bat
on a day that looked as if rain interruptions would dominate. However, there was
only one break as early wickets tumbled to the accurate bowling of
Dave Johnson (5-55). At 36-4, things were not looking promising for the
visitors, but Andy Powley (24) and skipper Geoff Lake (24) combined to take the
total to 79, before another flurry of wickets had Stanford stumbling again.
Dennis Wheatley (48), revelling in his lower-order role and Jon Barr (37),
beginning to fulfil the promise he has shown with a mature innings, rescued the
visitors. Their 68 run partnership clinched extra batting points, before
Wheatley fell and Barr took the lead in pushing the 3rds beyond 175. Southend were made to
struggle for every run as they replied. Their top 6 all made starts, but
progress was slow as Stanford kept a stranglehold. Super ground fielding brought
a coupl of run-outs and Jon Fuller (3-35), Adrian Page (2-40) and Wheatley
(2-22) applied increasing pressure. In the end, Southend were grateful to cling
on for a draw with 9 down. Stanford 3rd

Ricky Tavio 55, Steve Green 5-36 Gary Smith 3-34 Wickford openers Tim
Phillippe (68) and Mike Green (34), got the visitors off to a solid start with
their 82 run partnership. However, Stanford struck back through debutant Gary
Smith (3-34) Ricky Tavio (2-27) and John Youngman (2-42) and ensured that no
other batsman made it into double figures. A rain interruption saw Wickford
close their innings early. Stanford made a gallant
effort to win the game, despite the loss of early wickets, as Steve Green (5-36)
kept one end sown up. Ricky Tavio’s maiden 50 was backed up by Smith’s 22,
but no-one else was able to keep him company. He was last man out as he bravely
went for the win, leaving Stanford 4th just 24 runs short of their
first win of the season. Stanford 4th
