Stanford le Hope CC v Leyton Nomads
Stanford Rec hosted its first game of the season on sunday
(3rd may) as the sunday eleven entertained leyton nomads in a 40 over friendly.
Upon winning the toss captain lee knight decided to bat and although the pitch
itself was very green and its length which resembled that of an outfield he was
eager for his team to gain some batting practice.
As expected stanford got off to a slow start as runs were hard to come by and
both openers had to negotiate the inconsistent pace and bounce as well as
dealing with a slow outfield, some tight bowling from nomads openers reeves
(1-33) & Threadwell (2-21)ensured the task was even harder and restricted
the score to 29 off 10 overs. a couple of wickets fell as we looked to improve
the run rate and when skipper knight fell for 33 things looked desperate as 2
new batsmen were at the crease, and it wasn't long before another wicket had
fallen and the score after 20 overs read 73-4.
After the drinks interval ross poulton and les dennis set about rebuilding the
innings and did very well batting together for 14 overs and adding 90 for the
5th wicket, when dennis departed for 26 poulton set about the bowling looking to
push the score to around the 200 mark as well as make a dash for his hundred,
having played with a great amount of skill and maturity he succeeded in the
final over to finish with a well earned 101 no and at tea had brought the score
to 210-6.
Having seen the way the pitch had played in the first innings the leyton opening
batsmen knew they would have to work hard for their runs and that's exactly what
they did as bradding (10) and grattan (47) batted patiently and by 15 overs had
brought their total to 50 without loss.
Sam Spooner had the task of attempting to break the partnership in what was his
first bowl of the season which he did with interest removing bradding in his
first over along with another 4 batsmen in an excellent spell of 7 overs 5
wickets for 22 runs which completely halted the run chase and turned the game on
its head, young james drain did the damage from the other end picking up 3
wickets and soon enough the game was over with shearer picking up the final
wicket in the 25th over having bowled out the opposition for 89 stanford secured
the win by a margin of 121 runs
