Stanford le Hope Match Reports  -  11th August 2007

Shepherd Neame League

1st XI at home to Hadleigh & Thundersley

Stanford 159ao  (46.1 overs)              Hadleigh & Thundersley 160 – 5 (35.1 overs)

Lee Knight 42no, Greg Barr 31            A. Fleming 45, N. Anthes 39, Marc Lewis 4-52

It was another case of not enough runs for Stanford, as Hadleigh & Thundersley secured a 5 wicket win. Stanford had elected to bat, but made a slow start. Greg Barr (31) and Ross Poullton (22) helped recover the situation to 59-2, but there was a steady procession of wickets thereafter, as Flemming (3-30) and Baker (3-22) kept a tight grip on the middle order. Stanford No.5, Lee Knight (42no) batted resolutely, but ran out of partners as the Stanford innings subsided.

Hadleigh’s run-chase looked a formality. They made a slow start themselves, as Barr and Gary Sanderson bowled tight opening spells. However, the arrival of Anthes at the crease, sparked off the visitors as he hit a quick-fire 39. With Hadleigh skipper Flemming (45), he boosted the total over the 100 mark. The introduction of Marc Lewis (4-52), gave Stanford some hope, but Robbins (33no) made sure his side grabbed the points to leave Stanford staring at the relegation trapdoor.

2nd XI at Benfleet

Stanford II   231- 9  (52 overs)              Benfleet II  232 – 6  (44.4 overs)

Luke Dennis 90, Dean Hitchcock 64                Chris Webb 57, B.Burns 48

Peter Hiscock 4-48

It was a good effort by Stanford’s second string as they picked up valuable points, but they were unable to push for that elusive win. Luke Dennis (90), played a superb knock, as he and skipper Dean Hithcock put together a 124 run partnership for the 4th wicket. After they both fell victim to Peter Hiscock (4-48), the innings stumbled rather as only Adam Knight (23) of the rest of the order made double figures.

231 should still have been a defendable total, although the quick outfield gave full value to any shot that beat the field. Ian Sanderson, Daryl Woodford and James Drain all picked up early wickets, but Webb (57) and Burns (48) came together to steady the ship. Pritchard (35no) and Brown (22no) saw the home side to a 4 wicket win, but Stanford contributed to their own downfall as they added 47 to the total through extras!

Stanford 2nd  10 points                     Benfleet 2nd  18 points

3rd XI at Wanstead & Snaresbrook

Wanstead IV  220 – 3  (39 overs)              Stanford III  107ao  (37 overs)

Dave Gibbs 111no,  H.Gayle 76no               S. Dwivedi  3-14

Gary Smith 3-33

Stanford drafted in eight 4th teamers to take on League leaders Wanstead and battled hard to make a game of it. Gary Smith (3-33) gave the visitors a dream start as the first three batsmen were back in the hutch with only 28 on the board. Alas, the team could not go on from there. The back-up bowling was picked apart by the heavy hitting Dave Gibbs(111no) and with youngster Harry Gale (76) playing an excellent supporting role, they added over 200 runs without further loss. Stanford could only rue the host of dropped chances that might have kept the score within their reach.

The reply was a dogged affair, with all the early Stanford men hanging on for dear life against some good quality bowling. Danny Tavio, renowned 4th team slogger was a prime example, battling away for nearly 20 overs for just 6 runs. At 90-4, things were looking optimistic, but Dwivedi’s 3-14 proved a turning point as the innings collapsed, leaving Wanstead victors by 113 runs.

Stanford 3rd  1 point                            Wanstead & Snaresbrook 4th  20 points

The 4th Team game against Brentwood 5th was cancelled due to poor availability.

STANFORD’S LUCKY STREAK!

IMG_0129.JPG (927038 bytes)

Enfield 210 – 8 (40 overs)                               Stanford 204 –7  (40 overs)

Jim Gatting 77, Terry Plumb 36,                      Ross Poulton 87, Lee Knight 63

Who says cricket is a boring game? Just as Ross Poulton (87) and Lee Knight (63) were constructing their 73 run partnership, two buxom and very naked young ladies streaked across the pitch to rapturous applause from some of the elderly onlookers and startled amusement and drooling from the players! It only added to the enjoyment of a splendid afternoon’s cricket in which Jim Gatting, (son of the ex-England captain, who would surely approved of the streakers!) top-scored with 77 for the home team. He was aided by Terry Plumb (36) and Paul Mather (31), as they set Stanford a decent total to chase. Matt Hasler and Ross Poulton, with a couple of wickets apiece were Stanford’s most successful bowlers.

Early wickets fell, which put Stanford far behind the required rate, before Poulton and Knight got them back on course. Ian Sanderson hit a quick-fire 24, but Poulton fell in the last over, trying to improvise a shot or two as Stanford fell 7 runs short of victory. Stanford skipper Lee Knight was left with the last words: ‘I thought Ross and I were going to win the game until we were interrupted and I lost concentration. As captain I like to keep abreast of all situations, but those streakers certainly hit a bum note….’
